Updates from Room 201

We are beginning many new units this week, which I will explain below.  Conference times went out on Friday via email.  A sheet will come home this week for you to share if there is anything specific you want to discuss at conferences.  If you cannot make your conference time, please let me know as soon as possible.

March is Reading Month and we have some fun reading activities planned.  If you would like to be a mystery reader, please let me know by Thursday.  Details of our month will come home this week.

Math

We are beginning a new unit on two step word problems!  These can be tricky.  The biggest advice I give to the kids is to understand the situation of the problem.  They can no longer just look at the numbers and guess what to do.  They need to understand what is happening and decide what to do from there.

Writing

We will have an On Demand personal narrative writing assignment this week.  It will be our last personal narrative of the year.  I am looking forward to reading how far the students have progressed since our first On Demand in September.

Reading

We are finishing up book clubs.  Students have been placed in groups, reading a book together, and participating in discussion groups.  They have done a fantastic job at sharing their thoughts and using some deeper thinking to answer the questions.  Before we start our next reading unit, we are going to pause and do some lessons on characterization and inferring.

Social Studies

We are in the middle of our Michigan history unit.  Students have just learned about the war between the French and the British in which the British took over Michigan. This week we will be learning about the pioneer settlers come in and developing the land.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you soon at conferences.  As always email or call me if you have any concerns or questions.

Snow Day Fun

I was able to get a few pictures of the students playing on the snow hill this week before it became too icy.

Back Together

We are all back together again, minus Easton!!!  He is home recovering from getting his tonsils out.  When he comes back we will take another picture when we are ALL together!!

It felt good to be back in the classroom and back from snow days.  Mrs. Davis did an excellent job in my absence to keep the routines running smoothly.  This is a short week, so we will review and get back on track.  Next week we will have a homework packet and be back to a normal schedule (weather permitting) 🙂
