Reading Logs

Two reading logs are coming home tonight.  One says “Home Reading Log” and the other is the BOOK IT! log.  The google form I sent out earlier in the month was split about 50/50 on doing the BOOK IT! program or not.  You DO NOT have to do the BOOK IT! reading log.  This is just a bonus.  The Home Reading Log needs to be returned to school at the end of each month.  Please send the September log back to school this week.

If you don’t know what the BOOK IT! program is about, see below!

Your child will be bringing home a Pizza Hut Book It calendar with a reading goal on it beginning October 1.  Each time your child reads they may mark it on their calendar.  At the end of the month please have them return their calendar to school and they will bring home a coupon attached to it for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.  This program runs from October thru March.  HAPPY READING!!!

Eagles Spirit Day

For the most part the rain held off for us yesterday morning.  We were able to have the high school spirit team visit us along with the eagle mascot!  We had a few sprinkles at the end but it soon stopped so we could go outside for our walk-a-thon.  Thank you for raising and donating money to help support our school.

Below are some pictures of our day along with a cheer from our rocket cheerleaders!

Home Reading Log

I have a home reading log that is coming home today!   Your child will need to record the date, book read, reading level (if known), minutes read, starting and ending pages, and whether they finished the book or abandoned.  If they did not finish the book that night, they just leave it blank.  So, remind them to start a timer for the minutes that they read each night.

**We use a very similar log in class, so your child should be familiar with how to fill it out.

When the reading log is completed, please send it back to school and your child will receive a coupon to do an activity of their choice during ONE reading time in class.

Happy Reading!

Updates from Room 201

Getting to know each other and working together is how I would describe these past few weeks.  This is a fantastic class and I am truly enjoying coming in to work each day and being with your child.

We have been learning what it means to SOAR at Georgetown.

  • be Safe
  • Ownership
  • Act responsibly
  • be Respectful

We’ve talked about what it means to SOAR in the hallways, in the bathrooms, cafeteria, and even on the buses.  This class gets it!!  They have shown that they can do all of these things and I am so proud of them.  Throughout the year, we will continue to work on these life skills and doing what it takes to be the best us we can be.

We began writing and math last week.  This week we will begin our reading unit.  In another week, there will be a calendar that comes home to track reading.  We, as a 3rd grade team, are not assigning regular homework this year.  If there is something that needs to be done at home, you will have a couple of days notice to help your child complete it.  I understand that we all have busy schedules, so I try to give some extra time just for those busy nights.

This is what we do expect for work to be done at home:

  1. Read 20-30 minutes each night and track it on the reading calendar.
  2. Get on Moby Max a minimum of 3 times per week.  Right now students will be reviewing addition and subtraction.  In the next few weeks, it will be switching to multiplication and then later division.  Addition & subtraction are a 2nd grade skill, so we will move on quickly to multiplication.

In 3rd grade, Reading Counts is an option.  It is not required or as structured as it was in 2nd grade.  I encourage all of the students to take quizzes if there is one because it is more data on comprehension, but it is not the only way I track comprehension.

Lastly, I sent home a Scholastic book order last week and forgot to put a deadline on the paper.  If you would like to order any books for your child, please order them online by Tuesday 3:00.  I will submit the order after school.

Thank you for trusting me with your child each day.  They are all a blessing and I’m looking forward to a great year together.
