Pictures from this week

Thursday started with a U of M and MSU face off.  Looks like we have a few more Michigan fans in the class.  Nonetheless, let’s hope it’s a great game today!

Our Halloween Day was very fun!  The kids loved being in their costumes all day long!  We played Halloween Clue, Halloween Bingo, Halloween Math, and even had a grammar quiz about a book called, I Need A Monster!  Thank you for the food donations.  The students loved making and eating their spider donuts!

I wish all of you a fun and safe Halloween tonight!

Updates from Room 201

It’s a short week AND Halloween Week!  I have several Halloween related learning activities that we will be doing all week with some extra Halloween fun planned for Friday.  Remember students ARE ALLOWED to wear their costumes to school.  This will help everyone from congregating in the bathrooms to get their costumes on.  Please keep costumes for school simple and wear the more elaborate ones at home.

We are still in need of 19 plain cake donuts.  I have two spots open to send in 10.  Please sign up if you are able.

Post-It Notes

Thank you for sending in the post-it notes.  These are helpful, and needed, to jot down notes for our tricky words, questions we have, predictions we make, and retelling of each chapter.

Homework

  • Reading logs are due by Friday.  Students who read for 100 minutes each week and logged it, will receive a coupon for a free reading time during the month of November.
  • Continue practicing math facts.  We are testing every Friday on speed and accuracy.  Please take 5-10 minutes a night to practice flashcards or go on flashtopass.  Papers will come home on Tuesday telling which fact your child is on, but I bet they already know! 🙂
  • Beginning this week, there will be a 2-3 page math packet that will come home each Monday and will be due the following Monday.  This will be work that we learned the week prior.

Upcoming Dates

  • Monday, October 26: No School
  • Monday, November 16 & Wednesday, November 18: Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences Sign ups will be coming soon!

Updates from Room 201

Math Test

We made it through our Unit 1 math test and I am so proud at how well all of the students did.  They worked so hard, pushed through, and showed some serious grit to not give up.  Thank you, Parents, for helping them study and work through the take home packet.  All of this hard work paid off!!!

Moving onto Timed 10’s This Week

When you see your child’s Unit 1 Test (coming home next week Tuesday), you might see some great multiplication strategies at work, but a wrong answer and lost points because of miscounted tally marks or miscounting when skip counting (GREAT strategies to understand what multiplication means, but time intensive and prone to little errors).

This is a prime example of why we are working SO HARD on memorizing these facts in a snap with flash cards!

We will be taking our next timed facts test this week. Students who passed 2’s will move onto 10’s; 5’s will move onto 2’s; students still working on 5’s will retake that test this week.

***Because 10’s are typically pretty easy for kids, you can think about working ahead on 3’s (next week’s timed test).

Thank you for your help diligently practicing with your child!

Masks

The students are really starting to get annoyed with the masks.  It’s hard to have them on all day long.  Many of them are sucking on them and putting them in their mouth so that by the afternoon, they are pretty gross and it makes them not want it on their face even more.  Would you be willing to send two masks in their backpacks so they can get a clean one for the afternoon if needed?

Halloween Party

Our Halloween party will be on Friday, October 30th.

  • We will not be able to have parent volunteers or guests at this party 🙁
  • As you choose Halloween costumes, only school appropriate costumes will be allowed. Thank you for avoiding violent, gory costumes for the school setting
  • Students will be able to wear their costumes to school this year! Yay!
  • Please sign up here a volunteer spot to donate food items

Curriculum

  • Reading: We will wrap up our first Reader’s Workshop unit, “Building a Reading Life”. We will also do a “launch” of our next unit (my favorite one!), “Mysteries”.
  • Writing: This week we will begin Unit 2 of our Writer’s Workshop, “Changing the World: Persuasive Speeches”. I love this unit, as the kids have so much ownership of their topic and get to work on selecting something they are passionate about, creating a strong thesis statement, and developing strong, convincing evidence to persuade their audience to agree with them!
  • Word Work: Students will be working on spelling patterns based on individual needs indicated by a spelling inventory we took in September. This will be done through both small group and individual practice.
  • Math: We will begin Unit 2, learning our remaining multiplication families and introduction to multi-step story problems. This is HARD for kids — we will really need to draw on our grit and growth mindset throughout this unit! Thank you for your reinforcement of this at home 🙂

Upcoming Dates

  • Friday, October 23: Early Release (12:15 pm dismissal) / ARRAY BAKERY — Shh!
  • Monday, October 26: No School
  • Friday, October 30: Halloween Party
  • Friday, November 13: Early Release (12:15 pm dismissal)
  • Wednesday, November 25 – Sunday, November 28: Thanksgiving Break (No School)

Updates from Room 201

Twin Day was so fun!  Everyone made it their own unique way and I loved how the kids worked together to come up with their own ideas.

Library is on Mondays!  I have forgotten to remind you in these updates.  When your child finishes their book at home, they can send it in to school, even if it’s not a Monday.  Remember students can read books on Epic.com too.  Then just write down what they read each night and the minutes they read for in the October reading log.

Math

Continue practicing math facts at home.  Either use flashcards, write them out and time your child (30 problems in 1:30), or use the flashtopass app.  The better the students know their facts, the easier it is to solve other problems.  I am planning to have a math test on Friday.  A review sheet will come home on Wednesday.  All of this is subject to change.  If I feel like the kids need another day to review I will push it out.

Reading

In reading this week we will work on retelling our stories with only telling the key/main parts and also tackle difficult words.  We will review strategies they learned way back in 1st and 2nd grade and add on more.

Writing

This week we are going to practice writing responses to a prompt.  You will hear the the kids, and myself, refer to them as a RACE Response.

  • R = restate the question
  • A = answer the question
  • C = cite evidence from the text
  • E = explain

Every year it impresses me how far the students come with their written responses.  At first they are pretty vague and maybe miss the point all together, but by the end of the year, students are able to form well written responses to a question from a text that they have read.

Weather Ahead

It looks like we may have some chances of rain.  I am going to try to get the class out there as much as possible.  They can focus in class so much better when they can release some energy outside.  Other than that, I think it’s going to be a pretty “normal” and uneventful week.

I have been loving the sunshine this weekend and I hope you have too!

Updates from 201

Twin Day

Our class earned all of our 500 points to have a Twin Day this Friday.  Students can dress like a twin (or triplet or quadruplet) with a friend(s) in our class.  I will be sure to take pictures of all of our twins and send them out to you.

Reading

We are really diving in to comprehension strategies.  Students are making a note to themselves at the end of every chapter.  They are asking themselves:

  • Who is in this part?
  • What just happened?
  • What am I wondering or does this fit with something that has already happened?

This week, I sent home the October reading log that is required reading for our classroom.  Students should be reading 20-30 minutes/5 days a week for a minimum of 100 minutes per week.  I also sent the Book It calendar home.  This is strictly voluntary.  You do not have to keep track on this one too – only if you want the Pizza Hut coupon.

Math

We will have our first timed test on Friday.  Students will have 1:30 minutes to answer 30 multiplication problems.  We will start on 5s this week.  If students pass, they will move on to 2s for next week.  If they do not pass they will retake the 5s.

Halloween Parties

This year for our Fall Celebrations we are looking forward to having parties in our classrooms, much like years past.  This year will be slightly different, in a couple of ways.

  1. Parents and volunteers will not be able to attend.  (We will miss you!)
  2. Snacks can be sent in, but need to be store bought and individually packaged.
  3. Games, crafts, and snacks need to be sent in 24 hours in advance (or more).

Like previous years, we will be welcoming your children to wear costumes, if they wish.  One change this year is that children WILL be able to wear their costumes to school, and wear them the whole day.  The intent behind this is to limit children gathering in the restrooms to change, and limit the number of children needing assistance from teachers and staff to get into their costumes.  We invite you to send your children in a costume that includes no weapons or gore, and easily allows your child to participate in regular school routines and procedures.  Can they take it off themselves to use the bathroom?  Can they fit in their seat at their desk? Can they go down the slide or sit in the swings?  Can they wear a mask under their “mask”?  Please save bulky, or extravagant costumes for home use, and dress in a fun and simple costume for the school day.  Fall or pumpkin t-shirts are a great alternative as well.

We are thrilled at the opportunity to celebrate with your children, and look forward to creating another fun and memorable school event for them. I will send a sign up sheet as we get closer to Halloween.

Writing

We are finishing our first narrative writing unit and from what I have read, I am very impressed with the students’ writing.  They are publishing them this week and we will have a small celebration in class over hard work.

Those are the big happenings in our classroom.  Overall we are off to a great year.  Many students are comfortable with each other from last year, so there is a lot of chatter in the classroom, they get sick of their masks, they want to be outside and play (indoor recess is no fun), and they just want to be next to each other.  But each day we are making it and encouraging each other and taking mask breaks as much as we can.  We definitely are not under perfect conditions but the class is handling everything the best they can and we will continue to learn and improve every day!

Have a wonderful weekend!  Right now as I’m typing the sun is out! YAY!!!
