December 3

Updates from 201: Week of December 2

Here’s to another full week!  I hope you had time to relax and enjoy your time with friends and family!

Writing: We are working together as a group to publish an opinion writing that we feel passionately about.  Students did research about the topic to gain more solid reasons to be able to persuade their audience.

Math: We have started our third math unit and we have studied measurement with inches, half inch, quarter inch as well as liquid volume with gallons, quarts, pints, cups, liters, milliliters. We will move into time and elapsed time as well. Please check with your child about what math facts they will be working on this Friday for their timed quiz.

Reading: We have learned so many strategies for reading mystery books and we are learning that these strategies can be used with all fiction books. Students are working together to make a poster of everything we learned about mysteries. Soon, we will be moving into our next unit and will learn new strategies for reading informational text.

Social Studies: We continue our study of Michigan geography and this week we will learn about the ways we modify and adapt to our environment in Michigan.

Homework:
November Reading Logs are due by tomorrow.
A new December Reading Log was sent home yesterday along with some ideas to do as a family.  This is strictly optional and does not need to be turned in.Please help your child remember to sign on to Moby Max or Flash to Pass to practice their facts.

If you would like to Venmo me to purchase cloth for you, please find me on the app as @KarmanHoutstra. Thank you to many of you who have donated, and offered to donate whatever the difference ends up being!

Updates from Room 201

Getting to know each other and working together is how I would describe these past few weeks.  This is a fantastic class and I am truly enjoying coming in to work each day and being with your child.

We have been learning what it means to SOAR at Georgetown.

  • be Safe
  • Ownership
  • Act responsibly
  • be Respectful

We’ve talked about what it means to SOAR in the hallways, in the bathrooms, cafeteria, and even on the buses.  This class gets it!!  They have shown that they can do all of these things and I am so proud of them.  Throughout the year, we will continue to work on these life skills and doing what it takes to be the best us we can be.

We began writing and math last week.  This week we will begin our reading unit.  In another week, there will be a calendar that comes home to track reading.  We, as a 3rd grade team, are not assigning regular homework this year.  If there is something that needs to be done at home, you will have a couple of days notice to help your child complete it.  I understand that we all have busy schedules, so I try to give some extra time just for those busy nights.

This is what we do expect for work to be done at home:

  1. Read 20-30 minutes each night and track it on the reading calendar.
  2. Get on Moby Max a minimum of 3 times per week.  Right now students will be reviewing addition and subtraction.  In the next few weeks, it will be switching to multiplication and then later division.  Addition & subtraction are a 2nd grade skill, so we will move on quickly to multiplication.

In 3rd grade, Reading Counts is an option.  It is not required or as structured as it was in 2nd grade.  I encourage all of the students to take quizzes if there is one because it is more data on comprehension, but it is not the only way I track comprehension.

Lastly, I sent home a Scholastic book order last week and forgot to put a deadline on the paper.  If you would like to order any books for your child, please order them online by Tuesday 3:00.  I will submit the order after school.

Thank you for trusting me with your child each day.  They are all a blessing and I’m looking forward to a great year together.

Updates from Room 201

Hello Parents!  I just wanted to give you some updates and reminders of things happening in Room 201.

Science

There will be a science test on Tuesday on animals and their adaptations.  The students brought home a study review sheet on Friday.  Please remind them to look it over tonight.  They have loved going out to the pond and looking for animals.  However with the weather being so cold and with all of the rain, we haven’t see much action.  A few turtles, a couple frogs, and of course the ducks and swans but that is all.

Next we will move into a plant unit. We will review the parts of the plant and learn adaptations.

Social Studies

On Thursday we will have our last social studies test on Core Democratic Values and Public Issues.  A study review will go home on Tuesday.  The students have done a great job understanding the process of a public issue and what is their part as a responsible citizen in solving the problem.

Homework

Math homework is done for the year!!!  However, there may be random work that needs to be completed at home.  One of them is coming home tonight.  Students have chosen a public issue article.  They need to get two opinions from people at home (mom, dad, grandparent, neighbor, etc.) . Please send this back to school on WEDNESDAY!

The other homework is the Wax Museum.  This information was sent home at the beginning of May.  If you don’t know what I am talking about, please email me and I will send another home. How is it going finding an outfit?  Please let me know if you need ideas.  We will start practicing in class next week on presentation and using our notecards.

I think those are all the big things.  We will have fun activities going into the last 10 days of 3rd grade.  I will let you know ahead of time if anything is needed from home.

As always thank you for your never ending support!  Enjoy your day! 🙂
