Updates from Room 201

This class continues to impress me everyday.  They are SOARing through the hallways by being quiet and in a straight line.  When we have 100 kids trying to get to somewhere and another 100 passing by to try and get somewhere else, it can be tricky, but our class does it!  They also have been SOARing in the classroom.  These students impress me with their hard work, their effort, and their kindness towards each other.

Math

We had our first Unit 1 math test today.  I wish you could have been a fly on the wall to watch their determination.  It was absolutely quiet in the room and each one was counting on their fingers or drawing pictures to solve the problems.  Their minds were at work!

We will have our 2nd math facts quiz tomorrow.  Some students are on 5s and some on 2s.  Please remember to have them practice every night for 5-10 minutes.

Reading and Writing

We have finished both of our first reading and writing units.  Next week we are going to take a break and do some writing responses.  We will read a passage and then write a complete response to a question.  We call this a RACE Response.

R = restate the question

A = answer the question

C – cite 2 pieces of evidence from the text

E = explain and end

Social Studies

We will begin our first social studies unit on Michigan Geography.  During our current social studies block we have been working on having a growth mindset and reading informational texts through a Scholastic Newsletter.

Halloween Party

A sign-up sheet with be coming to you soon for the Halloween party.  Only parents that are volunteering may attend the celebration due to parking and safety.  All parents that volunteer must complete a background check prior to attending the festivities.  If you are unable to volunteer, you can also donate items.

Break time

We take several breaks throughout the day.  Two other breaks we take, other than recess, is a morning snack break and yoga relaxation in the afternoon.  We are trying to get outside as much as possible in the morning.  Below is a quick video clip of students working off their energy.  There are two games of  tag going on.  One game is Lava Tag and the other is regular tag.  I love watching them laugh, play together, and be active.

Holiday Coloring Contest

Yesterday a Hudsonville Holiday Coloring Contest page was sent home.  Students can decorate however they want.  Someone from City Hall will be here on Tuesday, October 29 to pick them up.  All submitted artwork will be visible throughout town, and the winners from each grade will be displayed at City Hall, receive a special prize bag, and get to ride on the Holiday Trolley in the Parade!

Conferences are in late November this year.  If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Updates from Room 201

Hello Parents!  I just wanted to give you some updates and reminders of things happening in Room 201.

Science

There will be a science test on Tuesday on animals and their adaptations.  The students brought home a study review sheet on Friday.  Please remind them to look it over tonight.  They have loved going out to the pond and looking for animals.  However with the weather being so cold and with all of the rain, we haven’t see much action.  A few turtles, a couple frogs, and of course the ducks and swans but that is all.

Next we will move into a plant unit. We will review the parts of the plant and learn adaptations.

Social Studies

On Thursday we will have our last social studies test on Core Democratic Values and Public Issues.  A study review will go home on Tuesday.  The students have done a great job understanding the process of a public issue and what is their part as a responsible citizen in solving the problem.

Homework

Math homework is done for the year!!!  However, there may be random work that needs to be completed at home.  One of them is coming home tonight.  Students have chosen a public issue article.  They need to get two opinions from people at home (mom, dad, grandparent, neighbor, etc.) . Please send this back to school on WEDNESDAY!

The other homework is the Wax Museum.  This information was sent home at the beginning of May.  If you don’t know what I am talking about, please email me and I will send another home. How is it going finding an outfit?  Please let me know if you need ideas.  We will start practicing in class next week on presentation and using our notecards.

I think those are all the big things.  We will have fun activities going into the last 10 days of 3rd grade.  I will let you know ahead of time if anything is needed from home.

As always thank you for your never ending support!  Enjoy your day! 🙂

Updates from Room 201

Happy Friday!

A social studies review sheet came home today.  We have a test on TUESDAY next week.  Please help your child study over the weekend and on Monday.  It is good for them to start good study habits now.  Five to ten minutes a night should be good.  I encouraged them to write neatly so they could read it at home.  If they didn’t and you need a copy, I can scan mine and send it to you.

CHAP STICK

With the cold weather, everyone’s lips (including mine) are getting chapped.  Please feel free to send in a chapstick (initials or name on it) with your child to keep in their backpack.  We will not be sharing these! 🙂

MOVIE

Next week, Thursday I would like to show the movie, Because of Winn Dixie.  We read the book and we are going to do a book to movie comparison.  The movie is rated PG.  Please let me know if you do not want your child to watch this movie.

I think that is all!  I am excited for conferences in a couple of weeks.  I sent out emails this week with your conference date and time.  Please let me know ASAP if that day and time do not work for you.
